Copper is an excellent metal for the metalsmith’s art because it can be easily made to bend and shape to the artist’s vision! This workshop will help those with no experience gain an introduction to metal working by bending, forming and texturing one or two copper bracelets. Basic torch skills will be covered as well as use of specialized hammers and patterning stakes for forming metal. The workshop will also cover various methods of color change with patinas, polishing techniques, and work hardening to retain shape of the final piece. Using finish coatings to preserve color will also be covered.
Those with more advanced skills in metalsmithing may select to do more a complex project that could include using multiple metals (brass and silver) and semi-precious stones in their designs. Those taking on a more challenging bracelet may not complete their project during the one-day workshop. However, they will leave with good start. They may continue to work on their project in their own studio or for those that have been approved for use of the Bellingham Metal Arts Guild Members Open Studio will have the opportunity to complete their projects in the studio.
Prerequisites: Adults 18 years or older, no experience needed. Students with torch and soldering skills may work on more complex pieces with less supervision. Instructor: Walt Hekala. Course fee: $75.00 plus $7 minimum materials fee, see details online.
